Red Light Ticket Reduced to Drivers to Obey Signs Under the Fairfax County Code
February 2026
Client was in Virginia visiting family from California. As it frequently happens they came upon a traffic signal that had turned yellow. The client didn't think they had enough distance to stop in time so they proceeded through cautiously. Unfortunately the light turned red before they got to the stop bar and were stopped by a Fairfax County Police Officer. After gathering our client's information they were cited for disregarding a traffic signal for going through a red light.
Our client wanted to avoid damaging their pristine driving record so they took a defensive driving course and provided their driving record. We went to court for them on their behalf (they did not need to appear). Upon speaking to the officer it was clear this was a close case so we made a motion before the Judge to have the charge reduced to drivers to obey signs which was granted. This reduction is important because this county code is not transmitted to the DMV record (so no points) and our client's driving record will remain clean.
